About Us

HEIW’s Quality and Postgraduate Education Support (PGES) Unit works to ensure the delivery of high quality patient care through the monitoring and development of high quality education and training and the provision of a ‘Local Faculty’ infrastructure to support it.

The Unit’s activity is undertaken in close collaboration with Foundation and Specialty Training Programmes and Local Education Providers (LEPs) across NHS Wales. In addition, the Unit works with stakeholders in Deaneries and Local Education and Training Boards to monitor the quality of programmes that include placements for trainees from Wales.

Utilising a risk based quality management framework comprised of routine and responsive processes, the Unit ensures that when training does not meet national (GMC) and local standards that changes are facilitated and implemented to improve quality.

The Unit also develops and manages a number of initiatives aimed at supporting postgraduate medical education across NHS Wales. This involves developing key stakeholder groups including trainees and trainers, and co-ordination of a network of Postgraduate Centres and provision of support for the AWHILES Library Service.

The Unit’s work includes the facilitation of programmes of quality improvement, including a significant programme of work with NHS Wales to meet the GMC’s requirement that trainers be formally recognised.

The Unit also plays an important role in educational governance, being responsible for HEIW's Commissioning Process and the establishment of Service Level Agreements with LEPs for the provision of postgraduate medical and dental education and training.
